The summer 2011 session of Campecine Youth Academy is quickly coming to a close and we are cordially inviting you to be a part of our final presentation. Please come and join us this Saturday, July 30 from 1-3pm at the Center for Interfaith Cooperation, located at 1100 W. 42nd Street in Indianapolis.
CYA will be graduating 42 scholars this summer. The youth have been working hard for six weeks to create varriomentarios (short-documentaries), issuemations (stop-motion animations) and varriographies (digital story-telling).
The topics scholars have chosento explore this summer include:
Immigrant experiences from around the globe
Worker abuse in Indianapolis service sector
Societal perception(s) of beauty
The tragic intersections of bullying and suicide
Marketing strategies targeting children
IN’s HB1402 -which prohibits undocumented students from paying in-state tuition at public Indiana universities
Culture Shock

Both a benefit show and a showcase of imported and locally harvested musical talent, Culture Shock explores the plethora of traditions and cultures found in Indiana while highlighting the amazing contribution they continue to offer our state. Through music, the purpose of Culture Shock is to demonstrate the cultural, religious and spiritual diversity that Indiana’s immigrant community offers our state in hopes that it opens our hearts and minds to appreciate life in a myriad of ways.
All proceeds will benefit a scholarship for an immigrant student. The student will be chosen by a reputable committee of the Latino Youth Collective. Scholarship application link coming soon.
Latino Youth Slam 2.0
Two poetry pieces are needed to participate!
Poetry Slams are a different than regular recitals. It is more than a competition, it’s a performance/recital, and your job is to get the audiences/judge’s attention to vote higher for you than the other participants. Through this performance you will find your own voice and learn to articulate it/communicate openly. SLAM has a close connection to hip hop in this aspect. To do this, you may use any means necessary, NO PROPS THOUGH! The basic breakdown goes like this… Read more >>

DREAM Act Passes House Nuvo Blog
Last night, members of the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act — better known as the DREAM Act — by a vote of 216 to 198.
The bill, if it becomes law, would give the opportunity for legal residency to millions of young immigrants who were illegally brought into the country by their parents but remain undocumented. Those youth would have to finish two years of higher education or military service to be eligible.
